KIUC Candidates questions and answers

Fortunately, I have good people around me who support me.2. Experience: What is the largest operational budget and largest capitol budget for which you have been responsible, either as a manager or overseer?Ben Sullivan - As a project manager for an architecture firm working in Denver, Colorado, I oversaw the design and construction of mixed-use residential construction projects with capitol budgets ranging from 4 to 8 million dollars. This responsibility involved creating projects within tight budgets & timelines, negotiating contractor bids, approving construction draws, change-order negotiations and general oversight of the progress of these time and money sensitive projects. My primary experience with operational budgets comes from the running of my own small design business here on Kaua'i for the past six years.I certainly see a solid financial background as valuable experience to bring to the KIUC Board, and my experience in construction management will be an asset to the Board.

Stewart-Busch tiff draws warning

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Tony Stewart and Kurt Busch were ordered to steer clear of each other Saturday in hopes of preventing a repeat of their high-octane confrontation on the first day of Speedweeks.

NASCAR officials summoned Stewart and Busch for a follow-up meeting Saturday morning, just hours after the two drivers tangled on the track — and possibly in the NASCAR officials' trailer afterward. The entire garage was buzzing over Busch allegedly insulting Stewart and Stewart retaliating with a punch — claims no one would confirm or deny.

NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter said officials have not decided whether to penalize either driver, but delivered a stern warning.

"You two guys better give each other plenty of space," Hunter said. "You clearly understand where we are with this, and we're going to continue to think about it."

Hunter said any resulting penalties would be announced Monday or Tuesday.

UConn, Obama Ticket

His players are cognizant of that issue as well. Calhoun, who said the worst scenario would be for Thabeet or Adrien to pick up a foul on the first couple of sequences, has noticed a difference in the way Thabeet is approaching play. Thabeet, who had all three of his blocks Thursday in the second half, is getting a feel for the game before letting loose.

"Everybody is scared of foul trouble, myself too," Thabeet said. "I'm not trying to get hit with two fouls and sit the whole first half and play the second half. First couple of games, Coach told me, 'I'm just going to start you the second half.'"

UConn has shown offensive growth, but Calhoun remains somewhat frustrated with the defense. But for now he'll take what he's getting because the Huskies feel better about themselves in high-scoring games than last season.

Tributes paid to taxi blast victims

Friends have paid tribute to two women who died in an explosion which wrecked the taxi office where they worked.

The women, named locally as Sue Barker and Ann Ryan, were killed in the blast in the small building in Immingham, North East Lincolnshire.

Mrs Barker's husband Tony was seriously injured in the blast, which left the business he ran on a garage forecourt, Fred's Taxis, just a blackened shell.

Firefighters investigating the explosion and fire at the premises on Pelham Road said they believe the incident was a "terrible accident".

Some local people said they believe Mr Barker, who has run the business for many years, may have entered the small office with a petrol can which for some reason exploded.

Mr and Mrs Barker's semi-detached house, which is about a mile from the scene of the blaze, was empty.

Thinking Right

The two-man race the hunt for delegates has become was evident Wednesday night at the Ronald Reagan Library debate — though Mike Huckabee continues to hang in there, at Romney's expense.

Romney argued last night that McCain is out of the conservative mainstream. McCain-Feingold. Twice opposing President Bush's tax cuts on the basis then that they favored the rich, though he subsequently argued that his opposition was because he wanted offsetting spending cuts.

"Those view are outside the view of mainstream Republican thought," Romney said. "I'm proud of my conservative record," McCain replied, accusing Romney of leaving Massachusetts with high taxes and heavy debt.

In a preview of clashes to come, Romney accused McCain of dirty tricks in Florida for his last-minute accusation that the governor had supported a date for withdrawal.
