| Waldoboro Town Manager, First Selectman Surprise Town With ...
The chair at the end of the Waldoboro selectmen's table was noticeably vacant Tuesday night as close to 100 people filed into the meeting room at the town office. Most selectmen's meetings find fewer than half a dozen citizens in attendance, and most find Town Manager Lee Smith in his seat at the end of the table. Smith was not at the regularly scheduled select board meeting, but employment lawyer Clare Payne was in the audience as First Selectman Carleton Johnson announced that Smith had tendered his resignation, effective Jan. 1. No reason was given. Payne was on hand as the legal counsel who helped draft the agreement, apparently in the executive session that commenced earlier that afternoon. The resignation marks the end of Smith's 26-year career as Town Manager.

Steinburg: 'We shall never surrender' (comment)
Is prior military service mandatory to be the president of the United States? Not necessarily. But it is a barometer for measuring character under fire. Robert Charles Weaver, my mother's older brother, was in his early 20s when he served in the Pacific during World War II. He was assigned to the Signal Corps under the command of Gen. Douglas MacArthur until MacArthur's evacuation from the Philippines in February 1942. Before Bataan's fall to the Japanese on April 9, my uncle was evacuated to Corregidor, where he would serve under the command of Lt. Gen. Jonathan Wainwright. Uncle Robert worked in an underground fortress, tapping out messages for help to MacArthur's military command in Australia, advising him of the plight of the 11,000 who remained bunkered down in the tunnels of Corregidor.

She soon was typing messages back and forth with Dominique, who introduced herself as one of Teds Personal Shopping Assistants. Dominique suggested a belt, pointing out it was 100% leather, or a wallet, which she noted had a coin pocket and space for nine plastic cards, used the live chat connection to send Annabel links to product pages and helped close the sale. Exchanges like this one, which took place during the holiday season, are convincing a growing number of online retailers that live chat can boost conversion rates.

How long do you think it should take to change all four tires on your car ? One hour ? Two hours ? Three hours ? Longer ? Ask Herman McGarrah the same question, and he'll tell you 15 minutes. And he's totally serious. And if you question how that can be humanly possible, he'd be more than happy to roll up his sleeves and show you himself - even at age 74. "He can still change two tires to my one," said Rick Hittson, who has worked for Herman's Tire Service on Arkansas Highway 112 in downtown Cave Springs for seven years. "He could whup anyone." To not only remain in business, but to continue to thrive for 50 years, as Herman's Tire Service has, you have to be doing something right. Speed is a gift McGarrah has always had going for him. History can be like an auto race. You can start on the pole, but if you spin out before the third lap, you're forgotten fast. In trumpeting what has happened to the Edmonton Grand Prix in becoming the only Canadian event in the merger of IRL and Champ Car series, nobody mentioned the name Thomas Doerksen. No mention was made of the man who dared dream the dream in the first place. "I imagined it," said Doerksen. "I believed when most others did not. As the founder of the Grand Prix Edmonton, I worked tirelessly and persistently for three years prior to Edmonton being awarded the Champ Car World Series. "Dreams can come true. And this really is a dream come true with the two series getting together and Edmonton being in the perfect position when it happened.

More than that, they want to rediscover the romance and theatre that used to transform a scruffy tin stadium in Shepherds Bush into a place of joy and wonder. 'Football should be an event,' Briatore declares. 'Our mission is to make it entertainment.' Dramatic changes have already occurred up in the directors' suite at Loftus Road. There's an espresso machine, for one. Then there are the elegant women with their tiny behinds and enormous sunglasses. And the dress-sense has improved immeasurably. It is impossible to calculate the acreage of cashmere in the room. The suite itself has not changed since the days of 'QPR rule, OK?', those glorious mid-Seventies when Stan Bowles and Dave Thomas humiliated defenders for fun. The anaemic wood panelling is of a hue that would make any airport hotel proud and the royal blue carpet gives off the reassuring spark of man-made fabric.
