MAUI NEI

Look and you will see. That's obvious, sounds like an agnostic sermon title but there's a strong suspicion too few actually do. Maui has many moods, most of them sublime. There's a reason the island is sought out by artists. First sight of the day: The bedroom window frames a ghostly landscape. An old rock wall casts a dark line. Panini rise from the shadow, their bristling fruit making fat fingers jutting from corpulent hands. Worn-out avocado trees stretch wraith-like limbs against a not-quite-gray sky. Mahina piha is still up. Stagger into the front room — damn this body-clenching flu. Cyrano skitters out of the way, only the movement and his white chest visible in the gloom. Sit in the first available chair. It faces a big window, seldom covered. The full moon sits just above Kealaloloa Ridge.

Oil prices close at more than $100 for the first time

Gasoline and heating oil prices appeared to lead yesterday's wide advance in energy prices due to the explosion Monday at Alon USA's Big Spring, Texas, refinery, which could be shuttered for two months.

"The refinery fire in Texas is making people a little concerned," said Michael Lynch, president of Strategic Energy & Economic Research Inc. in Amherst, Mass.

March gasoline jumped 10.93 cents to settle at a record $2.6031 a gallon, and March heating oil rose 11.45 cents to settle at $2.7614 a gallon, also a record.

A threat by a rebel group in Nigeria to escalate attacks on the nation's crude oil infrastructure helped boost oil prices. The rebels were acting in response to rumors that the government had killed a captured leader, whom authorities later said was safe and well.

FBI warns: Hitman scam back with a vengeance

The e-mail says the recipient's information was found on the suspect and that they should reply to help further the investigation. This, too, is a scam, the FBI said.

The IC3 in January raised a red flag saying it has received multiple reports on different variations of a scheme known as voice phishing or vishing. Vishing attacks against US financial institutions and consumers continue to rise at an alarming rate and a new vishing technique is also growing, the IC3 stated. In the new scenario text messages are sent to cell phones claiming the recipient's on-line bank account has expired. The message instructs the recipient to renew their on-line bank account by using the link provided.

The FBI late last year issued a pair of alerts warning users to be on the lookout for a couple email scams making the rounds.

Hemingway Makes Stage Début, His Intent Intact at Last

First came Mark Twain's "Is He Dead?," freshly dug out of the vault and adapted for Broadway by David Ives. And now the off-Broadway Mint Theater is mounting the first faithful production of "The Fifth Column," the only play by Ernest Hemingway.

The story of why "The Fifth Column" has been neglected is a complicated one, involving several mishaps, an inept Hollywood screenwriter, and a 1940 Broadway production of a bastardized version of the play.

"Ernest absolutely disinherited it and had nothing to do with it," Hemingway's biographer, A.E. Hotchner, said of the Broadway production. "I think he was glad when it closed prematurely."

Hemingway wrote "The Fifth Column" in 1937, when he was living at the Hotel Florida in Madrid, covering the Spanish Civil War for the North American Newspaper Alliance.

As the series celebrates its 50th ever race on Sunday afternoon, championship defender Germany take on a new driver in Michael Ammermller while Switzerland demonstrate the growing role of women in motorsport by naming Rahel Frey as its rookie for the weekend. When she takes to the track on Friday, the 21-year-old will become the fifth female to drive an A1GP car during a race weekend.

Home nation Malaysia's Alex Yoong is the most experienced driver in A1GP and, despite a tough start to the season, the 31-year-old from Kuala Lumpur remains upbeat about his team's chances at his home race. Malaysian rookie Aaron Lim, who knows the Sepang circuit well, will get his first taste of his home circuit in an A1GP car when he takes to the track this weekend.

Current championship leader New Zealand will have its sights firmly set on extending its one-point advantage over South Africa while Oliver Jarvis will be aiming to keep Great Britain, currently lying third, in title contention.

Beware dangers in using portable generators

Carbon monoxide poisoning. Electrocution. Fire.

With all the possible safety hazards that can occur if you misuse a portable generator, you have to wonder why homeowners take the risks.

"Lights being off, using candles -- it gets old quickly," says Duff Jones, owner of Ron Jones Power Equipment, a Spanaway, Wash., supplier that sold plenty of generators during the recent big storms and prolonged power outages. "It doesn't take long to get unhappy."

But you can be snug and safe with your generator, as long as you follow the rules. First, let's look at the dangers.

The gasoline-powered motor that runs a generator is an internal combustion engine, much like a miniature automobile engine. Like a car engine, the generator motor gives off carbon monoxide -- a deadly, colorless, odorless gas.
