In December 2007, Mr Putin publicly backed ally Dmitry Medvedev as his favoured successor, ending years of speculation about his vision of Russia's future. Mr Putin's endorsement, and subsequent adoption as candidate of the president's United Russia party give Mr Medvedev a strong advantage in the 2008 vote.

Mr Putin also made clear his plans for his own role, accepting an offer to serve as prime minister should Mr Medvedev become president.

Earlier in December 2007, United Russia party won a landslide victory in parliamentary elections, which Western critics described as neither free nor democratic.
