40% of Scots now support independence

More powers" is so vague it can mean anything to anybody. It cannot possibly be included in a referendum unless and until these powers are specified. When the electorate sees how little the Lib-Dems want to offer the "more powers" option will become irrelevant. As all three Unionist parties are going to agree on the level of "more powers" to be offered, this will become the new status quo. No-one is offering the present arrangement so it will be a simple matter to organise a two-option referendum; the Unionists' powers or the nationalists' independence. Let the people decide. .

Rring…rrrring. Gotcha!

You search for "free ringtones" through Google or similar search engines.

The search results include sites that advertise ringtones that are "100 percent free," "complimentary," etc. with no disclaimers.

You click on the site and maybe are prompted to click onto other sites. Eventually, you are asked for your cell phone number so you can be sent the "free" ringtones.

Typing in the number unwittingly "subscribes" you to a monthly service that's next to impossible to stop. You don't know it unless you study your next phone bill and, even then, it's hard to identify because it's not labeled as to what it is.

Peeling back the layers of who's involved and how much money they make reveals a complex Web of participants. Here's a simplified version:

There's an advertiser who puts the ads on the Internet and convinces you, using deceptive practices, to type in your cell phone number.

For Hillary, the 'Bill' may be coming due

American TV screens are now full of one of the most aggressive attack ads in recent history. Dubbed 'Children', it in effect suggests that a vote for Barack Obama will lead to such weakness on national security that the American homeland will be in peril. It is shot over pictures of sleeping babies and it appeals directly to the 'security moms' demographic that Clinton needs.

But the facts on the ground remain the same. It has finally come down to this: on Tuesday, Clinton needs to win Texas and Ohio. Anything less could force her from the race and spell the end of the Clinton dynasty. The revered Clinton brand, once so confident of a second act, is now desperately fighting to stop the curtain coming down early.

James C. Humes, a visiting fellow in history at the University of Colorado, writes in the Pueblo Chiefain:

A president is barred by his country's constitution from having more than two terms.

Slump starts to squeeze rank-and-file institutions

As you look for clues about the economy and your investments, it pays to stay close to home. Like the lobby of your neighborhood bank.

The turmoil in global credit markets is overwhelming in scope and complexity, even for seasoned regulators and other experts on the world stage.

By comparison, local banks that didn't follow their big brothers into speculative mortgage schemes have been a port in the storm.

My View: Preserving Rockport's Main Street streetscape

Preserving Rockport's Main Street streetscape

By Barbara Sparks Special to the Times

As you pass Rockport's Dock Square and wander up Main Street to the corner of Beach Street, on the water side you pass several decades of commercial buildings hugging the sidewalk, inviting observation in a friendly interaction with the pedestrian.

Most were constructed in the 1840s to 1880s, with the more recent Toad Hall Bookstore building inserted in 1926. The Haskins Building at 37 Main, anticipated site of the Rockport Chamber Music Festival's Shalin Liu Performance Center, dates from the 1870s. It's an eclectic collection, and that is its charm. It is the ensemble of architectural styles that gives this historic district its distinctive character.

How many people realize that if our beloved collection of storefronts were to adhere to current zoning codes, the buildings would no longer cozy up to their neighbors.
